StarUML V8 (8.0.0) Release

StarUML V8 is fully rewritten in Rust for better performance and stability, and provides builtin code generation and code analysis for many programming languages

StarUML V8 (8.0.0) Release

We are so glad to announce StarUML V8 release. The key changes in V8 are as follows.

Fully rewritten in Rust

StarUML V8 has been fully rewritten in Rust from the ground up. Rust is a modern systems programming language known for its speed and memory safety. By porting the entire application to Rust, StarUML V8 delivers better performance and stability, especially when working with large models and many diagrams.

Builtin language support

Until now, code generation and code analysis (reverse engineering) for each programming language have been provided as separate extensions. Starting from V8, language support is built into StarUML, so you can generate source code from your models and analyze existing source code without installing any extensions.

  • Standard edition: Java, C/C++, C#, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, PHP and SQL DDL
  • Professional edition: Ruby, Go, Kotlin, Rust, Dart and Swift (in addition to all languages supported by the Standard edition)

Theme-adaptive diagrams

Until V7, diagrams were always drawn with the same colors regardless of the application theme, so diagrams looked too bright in the dark theme. Starting from V8, diagrams adapt to the theme colors. When you switch between the light and dark themes, the fill, line and font colors of the diagrams are changed automatically to fit the theme.

File compatibility

To support theme-adaptive diagrams, the colors of views are now stored as color variables instead of fixed color values. When you open a file created with a version earlier than V8, StarUML asks whether to convert the colors of views into color variables. If you choose Convert, each color is converted to the most similar color variable so that the diagrams follow the light and dark themes. If you choose Keep Colors, the original colors are kept as they are.

Please note that files saved with StarUML V8 may not be loaded correctly in V7 or earlier. If you need to share files with users of previous versions, keep a copy of the original files before saving them in V8.

Extensions compatibility

Since StarUML V8 has been ported to Rust, extensions built for V7 or earlier no longer work in V8. Existing extensions need to be updated for V8. In the extensions registry, extensions for V8 are listed first, and extensions for V7 or earlier are shown in gray.

If you are an extension developer, please update your extensions for V8 and register them again to the extensions registry. Many features that were previously provided by language extensions are now built into StarUML V8, as described above.

Pricing and upgrade

StarUML V8 is available with a one-time payment per device, as before. The Standard edition is $159 and the Professional edition is $249 per device, and volume discounts are provided. Please check the pricing page for more details.
